Vin Scully, Verne Lundquist, Bill Raftery Among Announcers Who Have Made Greatest Calls Ever (Video)
5. Vin Scully, Game 1, 1988 World Series.
Pinch-hitting in the batter’s box was Kirk Gibson, the Dodgers star who was hobbled by injuries to both legs. On the pitcher’s mound was Dennis Eckersley, the dominant A’s closer who had led the American League in saves that year. This mattered little to Gibson, who barely moved his legs during his swing but still strong-armed a pitch over the right-field wall to win the game. Vin Scully was already a legend in Los Angeles and beyond, but this call forever associated his voice with one of the single greatest underdog moments in sports history. It also exemplified what Scully did best, allowing the moment to speak for itself, as immediately after the call he allowed the roar of the crowd to fill as the only audio as Gibson rounded the bases.
