Top 10 Controversial Moments of David Stern’s NBA Career Features Draft Lottery Shadiness, Chris Paul Trade Veto
10. Knicks, Bulls, Cavaliers, Hornets win draft lotteries. Whew, where to start? The NBA draft lottery got off to a rocky start in 1985, when the Knicks were awarded the top pick. It is tough to watch the video of the lottery, where one envelope is jammed into the tumbler while the others are lightly tossed, and not assume something fishy is going on. Conspiracy theorists believe the NBA wanted Georgetown star Patrick Ewing to play in the league’s biggest media market for marketing purposes.
Over the years, the lottery process would spawn even more controversy. The Bulls had only a 1.7 percent chance of winning, but they lucked out and landed the top pick in 2008, when native Chicagoan Derrick Rose just happened to be the best player available. The Cavs grabbed the pick in 2011 in what some fans perceived as reparations for losing LeBron James to South Beach. The cherry on top was the newly-sold Hornets winning the lottery and the right to draft Anthony Davis this year. (YouTube/Basketball John)
